The roly-poly F Litter puppies at 2 weeks of age.
The puppies turned 2 weeks old today.  It seems like the time is flying by! Amiass is a fabulous mother and she is doing great.  It is important to provide abundant, nutritious food to mother dogs as soon as their puppies are born because the nutritional demands on them are incredibly high during lactation.  Without supplementation, they will lose drastic weight and their body condition would deteriorate rapidly.  Fortunately, that is not the case with Ami.

Ami is eating more than twice her normal ration of food right now and is thriving on Dr. Harvey’s Canine Health base mix to which we add walnut oil and protein (roasted pork or chicken mostly).  I also give her a home made honey goat milk pudding twice per day to help her maintain her caloric intake and up her fat a little bit.  She loves it; it is good for her; and it is a good way to use up crystallized honey if you have some in your cupboard, like I normally do.

They had some milestones this week as they near the end of their neonatal period.  The red sand boy (whom we affectionately call “Little Hippo”) was the first puppy to open his eyes at 10 days of age.  The rest have come along behind them and all of them have their eyes at least partially open now. It is incredibly cute to watch them as the world comes into blurry focus for them.  They now initiate the first attempts at play when they see one another.  We could watch them all day. We have been impatiently waiting to see what color Boy No. 3 will be and the clues are slowly emerging.  Now, at 2 weeks of age, it is clear that he is brindle with a black mantle.  Although I am not yet certain, it appears that he is black brindle with a black mantle, which will be extraordinary.  Black brindle is an unusual but well known color in the breed, and black mantle on brindle is also unusual but well known.  However, I have never seen or heard of a Sloughi who is black brindle with black mantle, so Amiass and Toby may have given us a first. Boy No. 3 is not the only puppy with gorgeous coloring.  In this litter, all the puppies have fantastic pigment.  Girl No. 1 will be a clear reddish sand (like her mother) with black mantle.  Boy No. 2 is a beautifully pigmented brindle that reminds me of one of my first Sloughis, Ancora.  He is also now the biggest puppy in the litter, by far, weighing in this morning at 4 lbs!  Boy No. 3 will be a gorgeous red sand with no mask.  He also has a wonderful, docile temperament.  Girl No. 2 may be red sand as well, or she may be light sand, but she will have a lot of color under a glossy black mantle.  In case you can’t tell, we are really elated with these puppies. They are very, very promising, all of them. They had their nails trimmed last week without event, and they are due again for their next trim.  We have been doing their early neurological stimulation exercises daily as described in Puppy Culture and we are getting ready next week to enter their next developmental stage.  Depending on how they are maturing this week, we may introduce them to goat milk in a pan to see if they are ready to lap liquids yet.  We will be sure to post photos as we go.  In the meantime, here are their updated puppy weights for the week, and if you scroll to the bottom, I have updated their individual pictures.
