It’s hard to believe the puppies are 9 weeks old already.  Their personalities are definitely emerging as individuals and they are less puppy-like and more teenager-ish every day.  We continue to be really happy with how they are developing, and in particular, to how beautifully they move. A friend of ours asked on Facebook how we chose their names, so I thought I would post the answers here. FEIJA is named after a forest in Tunisia. These puppies are 50% desert bred Tunisian and we wanted to choose at least one name that reflected that unique heritage. FARJANA is an Arabic name that means “beautiful soul.” The Sloughi is a breed from North Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Algeria) that has been bred by the Bedouins and the Berbers, and we try to select traditional names when we can. FEZZAN is named after the Fezzan region of Libya which is home to the beautiful Wan Caza dunes. This litter is also more than 18% desert bred Libyan and we wanted to reflect that unique fact. FAIJAN is an Arabic name that means lion and Faijan reminds us of a little lion in character and color. FAYAJ is also an Arabic name that means peaceful or talented. Fayaj was named by our very dear friend who will be welcoming Fayaj into her heart and her home.  He has not behaved very peacefully this week, so we are hopeful that for him, his name will represent talent. Along with their emerging personalities, the puppies have found a new favorite pastime:  MISCHIEF.  Some of their List of Horribles is in this week’s video.  The list, at this point, includes:
  • Farjana is apparently an invertebrate and can squeeze through a hole the size of a dime.  (That is only a slight exaggeration.)  Little Houdini has squeezed through fences at least six times this week.
  • The puppies love their stuffies.  This week, they decided that the cushions on the patio chairs looked a lot like their stuffies, so they unstuffed one.
  • The puppies dug up the satellite cable.  They found that to be so much fun that they located and dug up the old satellite cable as well.
  • They pull hair.
  • They chew their dad’s beard.
  • They bite like velociraptors.
We are working on all of this as well as leash training and crate training, which have been our primary points of focus in the past week.  They got their first vaccinations on June 14th (at 8 weeks) and this week, they will go to their first puppy class.  I am pleased to report that they are sleeping mostly through the night, divided into two crates, and we are laying the groundwork for housebreaking. We hope you will watch this week’s video below to see what else they have been doing and how beautiful they are becoming. Soon they will be making their way into the world when they leave us for their new homes and while that time is inevitable and good for them, we will be sad to see them go.  But we plan to enjoy them plenty in the time we have left together!

  1. Hi hello mr/mrs,
Thank you so much for such a good site.
But above all for the beautiful sloughis.
Would wonder if I, a woman who is born in Brasil, may adquire one of your sloughi pup.
I’ll live in a quiet and nice place in the south and on the litorean beach. So it’ll be beautiful for the sloughi pup. I never had a sighthound but my friend had some rescued from races.
Would like so so so much to have one, maybe two, and specially a sloughi, cause they are a bit different from the other sighthounds.
Hope you’ll answer me as soon as possible.
    With kind regards,
    G.W.Janssen

    • Hello, Ms. Janssen. Thank you for your inquiry. We have not ever had a request from Brazil for one of our puppies. If you are interested in discussing it, please fill out our questionnaire at this link: Puppy Buyer Questionnaire. Kind regards.
